Carbon Markets

Conference Goals:

CARBON MARKETS WORKSHOP
For Mexican Business Leaders and Key Government Officials
Sheraton Centro Histórico, Hotel & Convention Center
Mexico City
August 20-21, 2009

Workshop Objectives

  1. Our primary objective is to inform leaders from the Mexican private sector about the potential benefits of participating in the international carbon market.
    Other objectives include:
  2. Raising awareness of the strategic importance for Mexico to sustain a constructive and responsible path toward a fast-growth low-carbon economy, despite the global financial crisis.
  3. Presenting successful foreign policies and implementation experiences from a comparative public policy perspective.
  4. Providing a forum for learning, exchange and networking for public and private executives that will allow for those implementing successful climate change programs to share their experiences and insights with their peers. For instance, the program will allow Mexican private sector leaders and senior government officials to connect with representatives of international agencies, executives in the environmental finance sector, project developers, and brokers actively participating in the international carbon market.
  5. Facilitating a dialogue between Mexican decision makers and representatives from the international community about proposed international cooperation and development policies related to climate change.

Workshop Content

Researchers, experts and senior policy officials will present a sample of best practices, policy lessons and success stories in the design and implementation of climate-related policies and programs from around the world via panel discussions and keynote speeches. In particular, participants will learn about the use of market-based mechanisms to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as cap-and-trade and carbon markets, e.g., the European Union’s Emission Trading System (EU ETS), sub-national programs in Canada, regional efforts such as the Western Climate Initiative and the Waxman-Markey Bill in the United States. Also, participants will be exposed to “lessons learned” from institutional support programs for the private sector, e.g., the United Kingdom’s Carbon Trust. Finally, participants will learn about policy initiatives that foster smart and clean energy conservation strategies.

Workshop Structure

The workshop will start with a full day of activities and then finish with a half-day. (See the projected schedule below.)

Participants

This workshop is aimed at private sector leaders, as well as key senior government officials from the federal government and states in Mexico who are interested in sharing their perspectives and learning about current developments in the international carbon market.

The workshop will accommodate up to fifty participants. Speakers will include:
